Our two new Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)
At LKAB Minerals, caring for the environment is at the core of our operations. We continuously strive to provide transparent environmental impact assessments for our products, helping our customers make informed decisions. We are pleased to announce the release of two new Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for Aluminium Trihydrate (ATH) and Magnetite Fines and Concentrate, further reinforcing our commitment to responsible sourcing and environmental protection.
What are Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)?
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is an independently verified document that provides detailed information about the environmental impact of a product throughout its lifecycle. EPDs can include:; raw material extraction, processing, manufacturing, and distribution. By publishing EPDs, we offer our customers transparency regarding environmental impact of our products, enabling them to meet environmental standards in their industries.
Aluminium Trihydrate (ATH)
Our Aluminium Trihydrate (ATH) is a by-product of aluminium production. Processed in Moerdijk, The Netherlands, it is a key material used in fire-retardant coatings, polymers, and solid surfacing applications. As a non-toxic and naturally derived mineral, ATH significantly enhances fire resistance and durability across a wide range of industrial and construction applications.

Key environmental benefits of ATH:
- Reduced carbon footprint: The EPD for ATH highlights a total Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 691 kg CO2e per metric tonne (A1-A3), making it a responsible choice for manufacturing.
- Circular economy contribution: ATH is sourced from high-purity deposits and processed efficiently, minimising waste and supporting a responsible supply chain.
- Water and energy efficiency: Our ATH production process ensures efficient energy usage, with total energy consumption recorded at 3,130 kWh per tonne.

Magnetite fines and concentrate
Our Magnetite fines and concentrate, including MagnaDense and MagnaChem, are mined and processed at our Malmberget site in Sweden. These products are widely used in high-density concrete, radiation shielding, and water treatment applications, offering both performance benefits and environmental responsibility.
Key environmental benefits of Magnetite
- Ultra-low carbon footprint: The EPD confirms a GWP-fossil of just 11.8 kg CO2e per metric tonne, which is significantly lower than traditional Portland cement, which can have a GWP-fossil of over 800 kg CO2e per metric tonne. This makes it a much more environmentally responsible alternative for carbon-conscious projects.
- Energy efficiency: The processing of Magnetite consumes only 250 kWh per tonne, ensuring minimal environmental impact.
- No biogenic carbon emissions: This product contains no biogenic carbon, ensuring clean and efficient industrial use.

Why EPDs matter
With increasing pressure on industries to reduce carbon emissions and adopt responsibly sourced materials, EPDs serve as a vital tool in environmental decision-making. They enable architects, engineers, and manufacturers to select products that align with green building standards, LEED certifications, and carbon reduction goals. By offering independently verified data, EPDs help businesses make informed choices that drive responsibility in construction, infrastructure, and industrial applications.
Supporting a greener future
At LKAB Minerals, our mission is to provide circular, critical, and climate-efficient mineral products for our customers. The release of these two new EPDs reflects our ongoing commitment to environmental transparency and responsible resource management.
By choosing products with EPDs, our customers gain confidence in the resourcing of their materials while contributing to a low-carbon and resource-efficient economy. We invite you to explore these EPDs further and contact our team for insights on how these materials can support your business objectives.
