LKAB Minerals BV celebrates 10 years of safety success
The team at LKAB Minerals in Moerdijk, the Netherlands, celebrated the fantastic achievement of 10 years of safety success, without a Lost Time Accident (LTA) on the 6th May 2024. An LTA is a work-related injury or illness that results in an employee needing time off work.
Ronald Haverkort, General Manager for LKAB Minerals BV, describes:
“I’m very proud that we reached this great milestone, it’s a fantastic team effort. There is no standard recipe to achieve important milestones on safety, however valuable items applied are:
- The belief that an LTA-free operation is possible.
- Apply the golden rules and encourage colleagues to do so.
- Be aware of your surroundings, situations change day by day, hour by hour.
- If there is any doubt if a situation or process is safe, stop the process! Nobody ever gets punished for stopping a process which is not safe, instead they deserve praise!
- Act as a team, take care of each other and avoid stress.
- Find and report hazards.
- Use reports for transparent communication, use them to learn and adapt.
We absolutely did a lot of positive actions to keep the awareness and involvement of all on a high level, but we also have to keep in mind that we were lucky in some occasions, where we spotted potential hazards could have led to bigger consequences. We can never allow ourselves to lean back when it comes to safety“.
For us at LKAB, ensuring a safe and secure work environment that promotes the health and well-being of all who work within our operations is fundamentally important.
Everyone who works for us and with us has the full right to work in an environment that is safe and sound. At the same time, each and everyone of us are accountable for work environment management which enable safe conditions.
We follow six Golden Rules which are fundamental to the way we work.
- Recognise and praise good behaviour
- Lead by example
- Let’s talk
- Always challenge acts that could cause harm
- Stop and think – what could go wrong
- Never bypass a system designed to prevent harm
