Gypsol floor screed soars to new heights at Wood Wharf

Case studies March 21, 2025

At LKAB Minerals, we are always looking for ways to push the boundaries of construction, and our involvement in a recent high-rise project at Wood Wharf, located in Canary Wharf is a perfect example of how innovative materials can shape the skyline of tomorrow.

The development of two impressive residential towers, J1 and J3, standing 34 and 48 storeys tall, posed a unique challenge for main contractors Canary Wharf and specialist contractors TCS when it came to finding a screed solution. High-rise construction can present several challenges when using traditional screed, mainly they struggle when pumped to extreme heights, causing risk of segregation and inconsistent finishes. This is where our Gypsol TS-15 stood out as the ideal solution for this project. You can watch the video below to find out more about the Wood Wharf skyscraper!

Gypsol TS-15 is able to maintain its consistency, ensuring smooth, high-quality results even when pumped to 180 metres. Not only does Gypsol TS-15 offer superior performance, but it also delivers environmental benefits. The screed’s use of anhydrite as its primary binder helps reduce embodied CO2 emissions by 88% compared to traditional cement-based screeds, helping the Canary Wharf project meet its environmental goals. Its ultra-thin application, at just 15mm, also helps maximise usable space by increasing floor-to-ceiling height. The reduced thickness of the screed also reduces the load on the building’s structure, helping improve overall efficiency.

The Canary Wharf project demonstrates how our minerals and materials can help streamline construction timelines. Gypsol TS-15 can be poured faster than traditional screeds, reducing project costs and allowing for quicker completion. With its ability to be applied in larger bay sizes, the need for joints is reduced, leading to smoother, more aesthetically pleasing floors.

The successful completion of the two towers, which include 790 new apartments, retail spaces, and vibrant amenities, marks a significant milestone for Canary Wharf, as well as for the high-rise construction sector. The use of Gypsol TS-15 in the project paves the way for future developments, showing that even the tallest buildings can benefit from innovative, high-performing, building solutions.
