Calcium deficiency

Calcium deficiency regularly occurs in acidic soils where natural Calcium has been leached. It is also evident in soils where high rates of slurry and fertiliser Nitrogen have been used. That is because these can have an acidifying action on the soils, which lowers Calcium levels. Supplying crop available Calcium with Calcifert Sulphur benefits crop health and cell strength. It helps to reduce its susceptibility to cell degradation and disease.

Sulphur deficiency

Sulphur deficiency is common in crops where high rates of Nitrogen have not been balanced with adequate Sulphur. Due to atmosphere cleaning by reducing Sulphur emissions from industry and vehicles, there has been a 75% reduction in deposition to land. Therefore Sulphur deficiency has become very common, affecting crop quality and nitrogen use efficiency. Supplying crop available Sulphate with Calcifert Sulphur helps rebalance the requirement during the growing season. As a result, this will improve yield and crop quality.

Following a dramatic reduction in atmospheric deposits, up to 85% of arable and 88% of grassland is deficient in sulphur. Sulphur is an essential nutrient required for the healthy development of all plants and vital to efficient nitrogen utilisation.

Magnesium excess

It is possible to move this excess Magnesium cation out of the soil by using higher rates of Calcifert Sulphur. We advise you to do this:

  • Where soils have very high Magnesium levels
  • Are hard to cultivate
  • Tend to hold water with a sticky texture

Calcium helps to restructure the soil by improving the flocculation and reducing the dominance of Magnesium.

Sulphur is key to efficient nitrogen generation. It is, therefore, essential that farmers get the most from the input they apply, especially with ever-increasing fertiliser prices. Calcifert Sulphur is a quick and easy way to supply both calcium and sulphur to the soil and crop.

Here are the most common questions and answers for this product.

Nitrogen-based fertilisers are applied in the spring and summer (Late Feb – August). The rate will depend on the crop being grown. Phosphate and Potash are used in autumn and spring, depending on the cropping requirements. Sulphur is best applied in the spring.

A soil conditioner restores the balance of the major cations, particularly calcium & magnesium. This correction of the chemical balance within the soil promotes a physically well-structured soil with good flocculation that encourages the correct aerobic biology in the soil.

Calcifert Lime application rates are lower than conventional lime making it a cost-effective alternative. How much you apply will depend on your soil type, acid levels, and crop.

For Calcifert Sulphur, this will depend on the crops Nitrogen requirement and is where you should use FACTS qualified advice. Some examples would be 175 kg/ha Winter Wheat and grass silage three cuts.

Calcifert Lime can be applied all year round. Applying Calcifert Lime before wet weather will increase the speed at which is reacts with the soil.

Animals can be put back to graze on treated land immediately. Calcifert Lime is not harmful to animals.

You only need to apply this once in the spring.

For Calcifert Sulphur, after applying the granules, your soil only requires straight Nitrogen fertiliser.

Yes, it will move the excess Mg from the soil, replacing it with Calcium and increasing flocculation, ultimately making the soil operate more aerobically.

The crop available Calcium will be taken up by the plant, reducing these conditions because Calcium will better supply the cell structure.

All soils require Magnesium when balancing the soil’s nutrients. However, once a heavier clay soil has the correct level, it is less likely that it will need Mag Lime. Sandy soils do not hold on to nutrients as strongly and require regular amounts of all including Magnesium. These soils are therefore more likely to request this product.

Ensure a broad-spectrum soil analysis is carried out so that the balance between Calcium and Magnesium can be worked out.

Calcifert Sulphur has a neutralising value of zero, meaning it won’t affect the pH of your soil.
