Fused Alumina

Alumina (also known as Corundum or Aluminium Oxide) is the family name for inorganic compounds with the chemical formula Al2O3. Fused Alumina is made in electric arc furnace by passing a current between vertical carbon electrodes. The heat generated from this procedure melts the alumina feedstock.

Brown and White Fused Alumina

LKAB Minerals offer Brown and White Fused Alumina for the Refractory industry. Scroll down to read more about the products, their uses and properties.

Brown Fused Alumina is a dense material produced from bauxite raw material. The end product has a low iron content making it particularly valuable in refractory applications.

White Fused Alumina is produced by fusing calcined alumina. It is white in colour, a dense mineral and has predominantly large crystals of Alpha Alumina.

Fused Alumina applications

  • Man standing in large kiln

    Fused Alumina in refractories

Brown and White Fused Aluminas are utilised within the refractory industry for the manufacture of high alumina fired and monolithic refractory products including bricks and pre-cast shapes.

  • Shotblasting, sandblasting application

    Brown Fused Alumina in abrasives

Within the abrasive industry Brown Fused Alumina is a valuable addition to products like abrasive papers and in shot blasting applications.

  • Coloured grinding wheels

    White Fused Alumina in abrasives

Due to its hardness (Mohs Hardness >9), White Fused Alumina is an ideal material for abrasive applications including sandblasting, grinding, polishing and coated products.

  • Brown Fused Alumina in Foundries

In foundry applications, the addition of Brown Fused Alumina helps to obtain a smooth surface finish in investment castings.

Fused Alumina standard grades

  • 5-8mm (-8+5mm)
  • 3-5mm (-5+3mm)
  • 1-3mm (-3+1mm)
  • 0-1mm (-1mm)
  • 0-250μm (-60#)
  • 0-150μm (-100#)
  • 0-15μm (-200#)

Other grades are available on request.
