Olivine Green powder and granules

Olivines properties vary depending on the levels of its two main components, forsterite (Fo) and fayalite (Fa). Olivine is named after its olive green colour.

Olivine is suitable for a wide range of applications. Other than the below mentioned applications include gunning, tundish linings, animal feeds and other horticultural applications.

Olivine applications

  • crucible showing molten steel

    Olivine as slag conditioner

90% of the world's olivine is consumed as a slag conditioner. Olivine is available in various grades for use as a slag former in the blast furnace or as an additive to sinter and pellets. The high MgO content combined with a low loss on ignition makes Olivine a suitable product as a slag conditioner for steel making.

  • Olivine for high friction surfacing

Extensive aggregate property testing carried out at an independent testing facilities showed that Olivine is a suitable material for use on walkways, cycle paths and recreational areas as well as other low traffic areas as an anti-skid road surfacing aggregate.

  • Man standing in large kiln

    Olivine for refractory products

Olivine sand is available in various grades for use in the production of refractory monolithics and mortars.

  • Foundry applications

Olivine Sand is suitable for use in alkaline resin bonded systems and produces a clean surface finish, making it suitable for foundry castings, especially for manganese steel and non-ferrous metals casting.

  • Man sandblasting metal framework

    Other applications for Olivine

EBT tap hole filler for electrical arc furnaces

Using Olivine as a tap hole filler material can achieve opening rates of 97-100%.

    Blasting

As a naturally occurring silica free material of low specific density, Olivine makes a suitable material for blasting. It is suitable for many light blasting applications as well as on stainless steel and aluminium surfaces for coating preparation or removal applications.

    Fluidised Beds

Olivine can be used as an additive to fluidised beds or on its own as the sand. Using Olivine within fluidised beds can improve attrition resistance and tar cracking properties.

Olivine standard grades

LKAB Minerals Olivine is available in the following grades as standard:

  • 5-8mm (-8+5mm)
  • 3-5mm (-5+3mm)
  • 1-3mm (-3+1mm)
  • 0-1mm (-1mm)
  • 0-250μm (-60#)
