Feldspar is the mineral name given to a group of minerals distinguished by the presence of aluminum (Al) and silica (SiO4) in their chemistry. LKAB Minerals' Feldspar is a plagioclase feldspar (Sodium Feldspar).

The minerals form in a variety of thermal environments, during the crystallization of liquid rock (magma), by metamorphism of rocks deep in the earth, and in sedimentary processes.

Feldspar product uses

Feldspar is a valuable ingredient in glass sand batch making up around 10 to 15% of the batch. The main reasons that sodium feldspar is used in this application is due to the alumina content and the minerals ability to act as a flux.

LKAB Minerals Feldspar is utilised in the production of flint glass

The alumina content of sodium feldspar is over 19%; this provides the glass with impact and thermal shock resistance.  Feldspar as a fluxing agent enables the glass manufacturer to reduce the melting temperature of the quartz in the sand batch enabling control of the glass' viscosity.

Paints & Coatings

Furthermore feldspar can be used in paints, plastics, ceramic flooring, fritz and glazes.

Feldspar properties

The typical chemical composition of Feldspar is shown below:

Al2O3 19.88
SiO2 66.89
Na2O 10.85
P2O5 0.20
