LKAB Minerals mine and exclusively source Mica (Muscovite or Phlogopite) from proven reserves worldwide selecting the highest quality raw material to manufacture the DekorFlake products in our European plant. The processing brings out the natural colour of the Mica raw material producing a range of large flaked or fine powdered products in bronze, silver, gold and black colours.
DekorFlake Product uses
The variety of aesthetic effects achievable with Dekorflake as a result of the extensive range of particle sizes and colours, is wide. Furthermore, different addition levels allow a variety of finishes to be achieved including granite, flecked, glittering/sparkling or metallic lustre.
DekorFlake can be used in a wide range of industries, some key applications in detail:
DekorFlake has consistent particle sizes and is colour stable which fulfills a significant requirement from tile glaze manufacturers. Using this product enables a variety of aesthetic effects to be created when incorporated into ceramic tile glazes. Colours and particle sizes can be mixed to achieve unique patterns, with glitter effects or muted metallic shine on interior decorative tiles.
DekorFlake can be incorporated into wallpaper designs to add a sparkling or glimmering effect. The flakes are applied directly to adhesive on the wallpaper pattern and rolled to ensure full adhesion.
In polished plaster, stucco, facades, finishing plasters and wall renders DekorFlake gives a granite or stone appearance or with lower loading levels or powdered grades imparting a glimmer effect.
A variety of uses
Other typical end use applications include high value products such as sanitary ware, polymer based flooring, solid surfacing, consumer plastic parts and containers, toys and cosmetic packaging. Other industrial applications include floor coatings, ceramics, reconstituted stone castings, slabs, bricks and decorative concrete.
All grades are compatible with a variety of organic and inorganic matrices and systems. Moreover, all DekorFlake colours and grades are resistant to UV, weather, chemical and thermal degradation. Appearance does not tarnish or diminish under prolonged external exposure.
The main physical properties of Dekorflake include
- Metallic lustre
- Controlled colour consistency
- Tightly controlled particle size distribution
- UV stability

Phlogopite is associated with metamorphosed limestone and ultrabasic rocks, particularly hydrothermal veins formed through metasomatism of magnesium-rich rocks as well as ultrabasic and carbonatite ring intrusions associated with ancient shield areas. LKAB Minerals' Phlogopite Mica is sourced from a major deposit in Finland.
Muscovite is a constituent of acid igneous rocks like granite, pegmatite or alaskite, some regionally metamorphosed rocs and clastic sedimentary rocks, ad is a product of alteration. Most commercial deposits are derived from pegmatites which contain 1-2% and rarely up to 10% muscovite. Mica is found in many regions of the world in the form of pegmatite rock and mica schist.
Both Micas, Phlogopite and Muscovite are non-toxic natural minerals. For further information please download the Safety Data Sheets in the box on the right.
