Bentonite

Bentonite is a versatile clay composed of the mineral montmorillonite which is part of the smectite group of clays.

LKAB Minerals manufacture sodium and calcium Bentonite products customised for a variety of industrial uses.

Bentonite product uses

Bentonite is used in a wide range of applications; within the foundry industry Bentonite is widely used as a binder as the mineral can withstand high temperatures. We offer a range of products dependent upon the casting method used in the foundry.

Within water based coatings the gel structure of Bentonite aids the suspension of other pigments and prevents the film from sagging. Sodium Bentonite is particularly adept at forming impermeable barriers perfect for pond linings and other lining applications where an effective seal is required.

White Bentonite products are used in ceramics to improve the green strength and improve the ceramic body properties. For paper making White Bentonite provides pitch control and improves the paper quality.

Bentonite for paper manufacturing

High efficiency Bentonite based grouting materials have been designed specifically for geothermal wells to ensure easy pumping, mixing and placing with Bentonite proven to have a long working life.

Within the rubber industry Bentonite is an effective anti-tack for rubber extrusion like that undertaken in the tyre manufacturing process. Bentonite provides earthing for underground cables to lower the soil resistivity and does not corrode the cable whatsoever.

Bentonite origin

Bentonite is derived from volcanic ash and consists predominately of smectite minerals usually Montmorillonite. Bentonite is categorised as a sedimentary deposit containing >50% Montmorillonite which is volcanic in origin. Montmorillonite is a dioctahedral layer silicate and in sodium form swells when mixed with water to form dispersed colloid-size particles. There are two common types of Bentonite for commercial use; sodium (or swelling) Bentonite and calcium Bentonite.

Bentonite toxicology

Bentonite is non-toxic and inert. LKAB Minerals do not offer Bentonite for consumption in any form.
